Long Curly Hairstyles for Men 2013

Long Curly Hairstyles for Men 2013

If you’re a man who’s been blessed with curly hair, smile! Women all over the world pay hundreds of dollars every month to pump chemicals into their hair, burning it to a frizz trying to make it look like yours-and you were handed your curly hairstyles on a silver platter!

That doesn’t mean that curly hair doesn’t get frustrating every once in a while, because it does. Curly hairstyles often have a mind of their own, ranging from the lanky, dragging curls sported by Mel Gibson in some sections of “Braveheart” to the tight frizz you see on Tom Hanks’ head in “Big“. If you’ve been letting your hair grow out into a “Surfer Dude” ‘do just to keep it tamed, relax. There are hundreds of options out there just waiting for you to make the most of them.

Long Curly Hairstyles for Men 2013

Shave it off. Hey, it worked for Justin Timberlake! The short buzz is back, and it quickly solves all of the options associated with your curly hair. It can’t frizz if it’s not there, right?

Justin’s short faux-hawk hairstyle.

Keep it short. If you aren’t the type of person who enjoys walking around with their scalp shining through their hair, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a lifetime of ‘fro. Keeping it short (as in, 1″ or less) will create a trim collection of curls against your head that appears neat and tidy (or, in some cases, 100% curl-free).

If you want to keep your wavy locks but are sick and tired of struggling with them every morning, a little maintenance might be in order. If you’re like most men you hate the idea of spending hours dumping goop in your hair trying to make it behave (and you’ve probably already tried with gallons of hair gel before coming here).

This is the time to break out a little preventative maintenance. Do you remember when your Granny told you that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? She was right. There are literally hundreds of options available out there for out of control curly haircuts that will soften and relax your curls and make them easier to work with Long Curly Hairstyles for Men 2013.

Stay away from hair dryers and combs, they’re just going to make your frizz worse. Instead, opt for a wide toothed brush (or comb if you absolutely can’t stand it) and comb it through with a touch of gel or ordinary conditioner after your shower. Allow it to air dry.

How to:
Apply a volumizing mousse through damp hair. Scrunch hair while holding head upside down. Don’t forget to make sure that you scrunch your root area too.
Flip head back over and dry hair with diffuser. To create the extreme volume at the top of head, take large claw clips and clip top sections of hair just at the root area. Continue drying until all hair is dry.
Remove clips and scrunch hair to remove any creases. To finish this look, lightly mist with your favorite shine infused hair spray.

How to:
Apply a curl enhancing cream like Label.m Curl Cream to damp hair.
Let hair air dry, or diffuse using a hair dryer on low but with high heat. Make sure to dry hair completely, including roots.
Starting in the middle back of your head, begin taking medium to small sections and twisting them from the root two to three times, then securing with overlapping bobby pins. Continue pinning sections and fanning out ends of curls to hide pins and create beautiful volume.
Leave out desired curls around face and hairline in the back (or you can choose to pin all the hair up).
Finish the look with a multi-strand headband or wrap.

Recommended Products:
Curls need extra moisture to fight off frizz and dryness. Try misting curly locks daily with a leave in conditioner that won’t weight hair down. My curly hair clients can’t live with out Intense Therapy from Pravana.

Best Face Shape & Hair Texture:
Any face shape looks beautiful with this uplifting curly look. Medium density and fairly curly locks work best for this volume and textured style.

Tips:
If the loose pieces aren’t your style, don’t worry, pull them up too. Or you could leave even more hair down if you prefer. It’s all up to you!
Braid it Down
Weave your curls into a braided look for your next party, or try it as a different look for the office. This is a great option for bad hair days too!

Long Brunette Braid - Loosely Styled

How to:
Apply your favorite curl enhancing cream to damp hair.
Let hair air dry, or dry with a diffuser on your blow dryer.
Use a medium barrel round brush to smooth the fringe area, swooping it back.
Bring hair loosely over to desired side. Separate into three equal sections for a traditional three strand braid.  Here is where you can get creative and try different braids such as a four strand, fishtail, or a two strand braid.
Braid hair down to ends and secure with a clear plastic band.

Recommended Products:
Curls are not created equal! Try different textures of styling products until you find the right one for your curls.  Label.m’s Curl Cream with a medium, soft hold is a great starting point.

Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Any face shape can wear a side braid. Medium to thick curly hair achieves the texture and density of this braided look best.

Tips:
Learn a few new braids!  Head over to Pinterest or Youtube to learn new braiding techniques. And don’t forget to practice your new look and allow extra time when trying it out for the first time.
Soft Side Curls
This soft look is so versatile. Wear it day to day or dress it up by adding extra glam makeup or a dress!

Long Curly Brunette Hair With Blonde Highlights

How To:
Apply curl cream to damp hair and using a wide tooth comb, distribute product equally root to ends.
Part hair on a slight angle from the side towards top of your head. This will help keep you from appearing too heavy on one side of your head.
Dry hair using a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer. Make sure to have the dryer set on high heat but low air force to avoid frizz.
Lift the front fringe section to give extra volume. Finish your curly locks off with a lightweight shine serum.

Recommended Products:
A curl cream should be lightweight, never dry your hair out and add hold and shine! My favorite is Label.m Curl Cream.

Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Heart and diamond shaped faces look stunning in this curly style, while medium to thick textured curls give this look density and volume.

Tips:
Ask your stylist to create a soft, side swept fringe and long layers to help support this curly style.
Simple and Sophisticated
Curly hair can be easy, simple and sophisticated! With a few easy steps, you’ll be ready to wow them at work, a night out or at a party with this curly look.

Dark Curly Hair Sculpted Around Face

How To:
1. While hair is fairly damp, apply your favorite curly hair gel (like Pravana’s Curve).
2. Begin scrunching your hair from ends up to root area. Scrunch smaller sections if your hair needs a little extra help curling up.
3. Let hair air dry or blow dry with a difusser attachment. Set dryer on low force but high heat setting. This allows hair to dry, but cuts down on frizz.
4. Once hair is dry, straighten out your part. Begin twisting hair back on one side softly and secure with a bobby pin.
5. Move to the other side of part and repeat soft twist.

Recommended Products:
Keeping curls hydrated is crucial is fighting frizz. I recommend using a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, such as Pravana’s Keratin Fusion shampoo and conditioner. It is light weight, but supplies hair with vital nutrients to keep it looking shiny, healthy and frizz free!

Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Diamond and oval face shapes wear this soft style best, while fine, medium,or thick curly hair can all achieve this style!

Tips:
To dress this look up for an evening out, add a jeweled hair pin or barrette. Simply tuck your accessory of choice into the twist on either side.
Come Hither Curls
Let everyone know you have arrived with this sassy curly look!

Funky Red Curly Style Pinned Back

How to:
Apply curl cream to damp hair and comb through to cover hair from root to ends evenly.
Separate hair into three sections, sides and back. Secure with clip. Drop one to two inch horizontal sections.  Twist one inch sections around your fingers, in the same way you would a curling iron. Twist some towards your face and some away from your face.
Continue wrapping hair in twists through all three sections. Let air dry or dry with a diffuser attachment on your dryer. Use low force but a high heat setting to dry curls and reduce frizz.
Once curls are dry, apply a shine serum to palms of hands. Smooth curls out and give them a little shake to loosen.
Section out crown area and sides (leaving some hair out over ears). Without smoothing curls, pull each side section, twisting slightly, to back of head and secure with bobby pins.

Recommended Products:
Not all shine serums are created equal. You want to choose one that will not weigh your hair down, build up or create a greasy look to your hair. My choice is Pravana’s Perfection Shine Serum. It controls frizz, is humidity resistant and creates beautiful shine!

Best Face Shape & Hair Texture:
Oval, round and diamond shaped faces look fabulous in this curly style while medium to thick textured curls respond nicely to the twisting technique.

Tips:
Curls need lots of extra moisture. Ask your stylist for an in-salon deep conditioning treatment or try an at home weekly treatment such as Pravana’s Perfection Hair Masque.
Fun & Flirty
While most curly haired beauties think fringe won’t work, this look proves otherwise!  These beautiful curls paired with fringe create an interesting and hip Hairstyles for Curly Long Hair 2013.

Sweet Brunette Style Curly Bangs

How to:
Apply a volumizing mousse to damp hair. Comb through to ensure it covers root to ends.
Part hair down the center and comb fringe forward. Begin scrunching hair in medium sections from ends to roots. Continue through the entire head, including the fringe.
Dry hair using a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer. Tilt your head to the side and work the diffuser from ends lifting up to the root area.
Once dry, mist hair with your favorite shine spray and you’re ready to go!

Recommended Products:
I prefer more of a “wet” or pump mousse when working with curly hair.  This cuts down on the crunchy feel. My favorite? Pravana’s Density, available in salons.

Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Diamond or oval face shapes look best in this curly fringe. Medium curl and density is ideal for this look.

Tips:
Want to go for a different look with your fringe?  Try drying them with a round brush and sweeping off to the side, or braiding them back.
Easy Whimsical Curls
Lighten up your locks with these airy soft curls. This look is great for a night out, wedding or just hanging out.

Airy Long Blonde Curls

How to:
Apply a curling cream or mousse to damp hair.
Section hair into three sections (0ne back and one on each side). Using clips to secure sections, let down two inch horizontal sections. Take smaller sections and twist around your fingers. Make sure to twist some towards your face and some away. Leave sections wound to air dry or dry with a diffuser.
Once hair is dry, use a few drops of shine serum in your palms and begin to soften twists. For added volume, flip head upside down and shake your curls out.

Recommended Products:
This technique for curls works great with a lightweight, medium hold curling product like as Label.m Curl Cream.

Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Heart, round, diamond and oval shaped faces look great in these layered curls while medium to thick curly hair holds the style best.

Tips:
For larger curls, take bigger sections. Smaller curls cut down the size of your sections.
‘Finely’ an Easy Curl!
Working with fine natural curls has never been easier.

Long Brunette Shiny Curls

How to:
Apply medium hold curl enhancing gel to damp hair. For more volume, use a spray in root volumizer as well.
Scrunch hair from roots to ends to enhance curls and volume. Dry hair using a diffuser attachment on your dryer set on a low force but high heat.
Once curls are dry, use hands to lift and slightly push back the front of your hair. Spray with a firm hold hair spray to finish the look.

Recommended Products:
When your hair is fine, it is most important to use a gel that won’t dry your hair out or weigh it down. Pravana’s Curl Enhancing Gel is my favorite. It’s light weight and won’t build up or dry your hair out.

Best Face Shape & Hair Texture:
Any face shape can rock this curly and simple look, although if you have an oval shaped face, be careful not to lift hair too high in the front as this can elongate your face. Fine to medium density curls work best with this look.

Tips:
Fine curly hair is prone to frizz easily. If this starts to happen while drying, mist hair with water and scrunch. Bonus tip: this style only works with some medium to shorter layers in your hair. Ask your stylist for soft texture and layers to ensure beautiful volume.
Scrunch It Up
This alluring and quite sexy look is easy and versatile.

Cute Scrunched Long Blonde Hair with Product

How to:
While hair is quite damp, apply a curl enhancing gel or mousse.
Scrunch hair in small sections to achieve desired curl. If you need to add some extra volume, flip head over and scrunch close to roots.
Let air dry. At this point, you want to refrain from touching your hair as much as possible. This will keep the chance of frizz to a minimum.
Once hair is dry, lift front section or fringe area and spray with a firm hairspray. If needed, you can lightly mist your whole Hairstyles for Curly Long Hair 2013.

Recommended Products:
A medium to firm holding gel keeps scrunched curls looking their best. I recommend Redken’s Ringlet Curling Gel.

Best Face Shape and Hair Texture:
Oval and diamond shaped faces look amazing in this slimming style, while medium texture but highly curly hair works wonders when scrunching.

Tips:
If your curls don’t want to play along, have a water bottle handy!  Mist over your style and your hands then lightly scrunch to reactivate product.

Hairstyles for Curly Long Hair 2013: Learning new and exciting ways to style your long hair while working with natural curls not only saves time and damage from blow drying and flat ironing, but it keeps you the envy of straight haired beauties too! Make sure to keep up on those trims to ensure your ends won’t frizz. Take care of your curls and they will be good to you. Happy Styling!

Curly Long Hairstyles 2013

Curly Long Hairstyles 2013

A casual long curly hairstyle can be described as soft, natural, and carefree with body and bounce. It's the kind of hairstyle you could wear any time at almost any occasion. These hairstyles can vary from long below the shoulders with graduated layers, to one length looks. Sometimes some hair is cut shorter to break up the style; for example, bangs used to shorten the face shape and accentuate the eyes. For natural curls or even artificial ones (permed hair), casual long curly hairstyles are quick to create because they fall into shape based on the curls and cut. Styling will require the use of products, namely liquid gels, and mouses in various forms and strengths, to keep the hair settled and not frizzed. Long curly casual hairstyles can be tied back, worn half up or half down or dressed into a more formal style - proving the versatility of this hairstyle.

Hairstyles for Long Curly Hair 2013

Celebrities favor tousled, wavy haircuts for the nonchalant, I-woke-up-this-way vibe they create on the red carpet. But what we don’t see in paparazzi photographs is the army it took to create said waves. From haircut to blowout to curling iron to carefully applied product, the most coveted wavy hairstyles are often the most contrived.

Achieving perfect waves doesn’t have to be hard.  It all comes down to your haircut. Too many layers can make the hair look too round and too voluminous (and in turn make it hard to manage), while none at all can make it appear boxy. The key is knowing what cut is right for this hair type—and then you, too, will have a red carpet-worthy Hairstyles for Long Curly Hair 2013.

Mechanics of a Wavy Haircut
Cutting naturally wavy hair has its set of challenges. “The biggest concerns for women with this hair type are two-fold: don’t make my hair look like a mushroom and cut it in a way that makes it easy to style,” says Rene Sera, co-owner of New York City’s Space Salon. Layers are important to ward off a “mushroom” or “rounded” effect, but how they’re cut and where they’re placed can make or break your style.

When adding layers, your stylist needs to account for spring—they can’t be too short or too numerous. You also want to ensure they’re placed throughout the interior and exterior of the hair, which helps create that desired draping effect. The experts recommend cutting with scissors, while tools like razors should be used only to add softness and definition Hairstyles for Long Curly Hair 2013.

Haircuts for Long, Wavy Hair
For women with hair that falls way below the shoulders, your most flattering cut is long, graduated layers with a side-angled or sweeping bang. “Long layers on this length allow the wave to release itself and give swing and movement to the hair,” says Sera. A few face-framing pieces are also an option to keep the hair from crowding or even elongating your features.

QUIZ: Measure How Healthy Your Hair Looks

Haircuts for Shoulder-Length, Wavy Hair
Like long hair, medium or shoulder length looks best with long layers. “The layers need to be cut throughout the interior of the hair and framed around the face,” says celebrity stylist Gina Bertolotti. When face-framing, layers should fall from the cheekbones to the collarbone. Avoid blunt or bob styles with this length, otherwise, adds Bertolotti, “The bottom gets too heavy and the hair will take on a triangular effect.”

Haircuts for Short, Wavy Hair
Short waves, or hair that’s ear to chin length, should opt for a one-length cut. “Unlike long or medium hair, too many layers will make it look rounded,” says Bertolotti. “In this case, you need the weight of the hair to keep it from springing up,” she adds. Adding a long bang is possible (it should start at the cheekbone and no shorter) and texturizing the ends to add softness is also an option.

Hairstyles for Long Curly Hair 2013: As for updos, the experts agree that a loose chignon with a few wavy pieces falling around the face, and a half-up half-down style are head turners. “These two styles don’t disguise or hide the wave, but actually appreciate it and show it off,” says Bertolotti.

Curly Hairstyles for Long Hair 2013

There’s nothing more beautiful than long, lustrous curls. But for women with this hair type, perfect spirals are almost impossible to achieve. Heat and humidity, rain and wind—they’re at the mercy of the weather. The climate, literally, dictates how their hair will behave Curly Hairstyles for Long Hair 2013.

Or maybe not. According to Ouidad, a hairstylist specializing in haircuts for curly hair in New York City, soft, smooth curls should and can be the case every single day—no matter the forecast. “If your curls are cut correctly, you won’t fear humidity,” she says. “The hair will be far more manageable, which is why it’s essential to go to a stylist with an expertise in cutting curly hair.”

Mechanics of a Curly Haircut
Because no curls are created equal, the cut is that much more important. Your stylist needs to consider the diameter of the curl, as well as its spring factor—how loose or how tight. The curl pattern and how it fits together is also a critical detail. “There’s really no room for error. You have to understand curly hair and strategically plan your cut,” notes.

If the hair is cut blunt, it creates a boxy, almost pyramid-like effect. If thinned or texturized (a technique used to add dimension) the balance of each wave is thrown off, creating an uneven pattern and increased frizz. Dry cutting is not recommended—the hair should be freshly washed and conditioned before cutting. “You need to work with the natural nature of curl. Curly hair dries differently every time so you need to cut it wet to guarantee a balanced, well-fit cut,” says.

QUIZ: Measure How Healthy Your Hair Looks

The technique most curly haired specialists use is known as carving and slicing. How it works: hair is cut with the curvature of the curl pattern so the curls fit together like a puzzle, as opposed to stacking. The carving and slicing process removes bulk while enhancing the natural curl pattern, resulting in curls that gracefully cascade and are easier to manage (less friction, less frizz).

Haircuts for Long, Curly Hair
For women with long curly hair, you can go blunt along the bottom (the weight of the hair at this length allows for this), but your stylist should slice the outer layer to create movement and keep the hair from appearing triangular. The perfect example: Nicole Kidman, whose hair falls to one length, with strategically placed shorter pieces to create enviable shape, bounce and flow Curly Hairstyles for Long Hair 2013.

Haircuts for Medium, Curly Hair
Medium length, or hair that sweeps the shoulder when dry, looks best when curls are sliced shorter and at different lengths to create movement and maintain balance among the curls (think Katherine Heigl). One thing to note with all lengths, but particularly medium: never layer. Layering is the process of cutting hair straight across at an even level. Curls need to be cut to fit—each one gently meeting the next.

Haircuts for Short, Curly Hair
With short hair, believe it or not, you can create any look or shape. “The sky is the limit as long as the curl is cut correctly,” says Ouidad. A pixie cut (a la Halle Berry) or a chin-length style (think Charlize Theron) are the two most wearable—and requested—styles.

Curly Hairstyles for Long Hair 2013: Pulling back curly hair is equally as limitless. And because the texture gives the hair more grip, it’s easier to manipulate—and it stays put. Half-up, a French twist and a loose chignon are the pro picks, while styles like braids can pose more of a challenge, depending on the thickness of the curl.
